After the experience I had with my mother's care, I would make sure I could check up on them at unexpected times.

They're not going to make a programme about a good care home are they because on one would watch. I worked as a care assistant for 5 years in a home for the elderly and the residents were shown nothing but love and warmth from the staff.

Please have your doubts and do your homework.
I worked in the medical field for 15 years and I hate to tell you but most likely what you saw in that television program is true. I did not see the television program myself so I cannot say this with certainty, only that what I have witnessed and heard about is quite horrible.
I am guessing that you are not American as are many of the people answering this. I do not know how these things are in Britain but, in America, they can be hellholes. Actually, most of them are. Also, most American seniors do not have the money to get into a good one.
If you have an elderly relative or friend going into one, email me and I shall tell you a few things you, yourself, can do to ascertain if it is a good one and some telltale signs that it is a hellhole.

Yes, indeed I also have watched a few videos, on the subject of the elderly in the nursing homes, and how they were abused by some staff members, and any money that was left with them was stolen, from them. This was on the news. It does make you wonder just what goes on after hours. Is it better to keep them in their home, and get them some help to come in ? Difficult subject, I would say.

Stuff like that has gone on in those places for years we had to bring my poor old Gran home from one when I was little (and that's a LLLLONG time ago!). My mum is in her late Eighties now and I will never let her go into a home no matter how hard it is to look after her.
Fortunately she is very well and independent so I may never have to make the choice!

My mum was in a care home from 1980 to 1993 when she died. It was very nice and they really cared about her. I was very happy with the place.
I think you only see the bad ones on TV - the good ones aren't interesting enough for a programme!

my mums home was brilliant, when my mum died they came to the funeral, it was such a lovely place and my sister and brother and my dad , we all had a say in how my mum was looked after and if she had an accident, that wasn't too major, they called me to see what i wanted to do , like call a doctor or something like that , and i always did ,just to make sure, and we could go see her anytime, even during the night if we wanted too, they was never an appointment system, i would recommend looking around though and don't go to ones that you have to make an appointment to see, the best ones are the ones where you can just drop in unexpectedly

That's why it's a good idea either to be rich or to invest some money in long-term care insurance. That way you have money set aside so you have at least a fighting chance of getting into a good one.
Although....now that you mention it I might want to also invest in a chastity belt, if they still make them. Oh duh, that won't help. You can't plug up all your orifi. Although maybe if I just wore one at night ... it could be unlocked in the morning. And then it's just my mouth I'd have to worry about.

i don't think there all like that, well i hope not. if you have a relative in one all you can do is talk to them and keep a eye out. if you have a relative going in to one just do your home work.
