Shyness can be overcome with time. Don't be so hard on yourself and work on it gradually. There are plenty of great books out there on how to break the ice with people. I can tell you that pretending to be confident will eventually turn into confidence. Don't be so concerned about if people can tell if you are confident or not - they're probably worried about themselves. Most people are so self-centered, they don't have time to worry about you. This is good because it makes it easy to appear confident. Just relax, be yourself, and try to assert yourself in small ways. Say hello to strangers for no reason, ask people what time it is, or ask for directions. These are ways to practice.

I would also recommend studying the art of sales - that's all about boosting your confidence. I also recommend Dale Carnegie's "How to Win Friends and Influence People." It has a cheesy title but it's been around for years and has great insight to developing friendships and confidence.

I used to do sales. Positive affirmations every day are helpful. Stand in front of a mirror and look yourself in the eyes. Say to yourself over and over at least 10 times every morning: "Today is going to be great! Today I'm going to speak loudly and confidently!" or whatever affirmation works for you. If you google "affirmations" I bet you'll find something that appeals to you. Be patient and do it every day for 30 days. They say it takes at least 14 days to break old habits. You will feel absolutely ridiculous doing this the first few times. But once it starts working for you, you will get a chuckle out of it and find yourself repeating it in your head throughout the day, which can help calm you down.

Hope some of this helps. :)

Practice. Try practicing on your family or close Friends, the more comfortable you get with them, it will be no time at all before you can speak your mind around anyone!
