Which ethnic groups is America supporting in Iraq and why?

I get the idea that when people (politicians especially) mention the "Iraqi people", that the "Iraqi people" need this or deserve that, they really aren't being clear on exactly who they are referring to.

I am just looking for a clear cut answer as to which ethnic groups (shiite, kurds, etc.) America is and isn't supporting militarily and politically in the current conflict in Iraq. Also, a very brief summary of the history of the different ethnic groups in Iraq would be really helpful. Thanks.
