The reason I ask is because I think "african american" is a racist term, since it leaves all black peole who are not americans, without a "proper" denomination to their ethnic group, other than "black", but some people have said it is "offensive" and I really don't understand why. I am not offended to be called "latin american" nor "hispanic"; such are the words to name my ethnic group.

I don't really mind "black people". I have a thing with people referring to black people as "blacks" though. Blacks are cigarettes and it sounds weird as hell to me when people say it. Kinda like sayin whitey or something.

Most "African Americans" I know call themselves 'Black'. I think it's a better term anyway. Most Black Americans have mixed bloodlines anyway. I read somewhere the average Black American is only 60% African. The rest is White and/or Native American. At first I found that hard to believe, but American Blacks don't look like Black Africans...at least to me.

People even use the term in Canada. It's ridiculous. Once upon at time, '*****' had no negative connotations. But eventually it was misused over and over and it became some sort of insult. Maybe we should all just relax. This happens with all kinds of terms including a bunch of words for 'homosexual'.
