You probably should start by talking to a psychiatrist or therapist. It also might be a good idea to try to find a group of people with similar problems. Good luck.

Elisha Otis, founder of the Otis Elevator Company, had trouble selling his elevators when he first made them. At the World's Fair (I don't remember which year), he could sell a single one... so before the last day of the fair, he posted fliers everywhere saying that he was going to kill himself by taking one of his elevators several stories up and cutting the rope. Naturally, he drew a pretty big crowd. And when the time came, he followed through with his promise... he took his elevator to the top and cut the rope.
To everyone's amazement, IT DIDN'T FALL. They're designed to self-lock when something like that happens, which is why you've never heard of anyone actually being hurt by an elevator falling. Elevators are only dangerous in movies. Unless elevator music drives you to kill yourself, that's another problem entirely.

When nobody is around, get on an elevator, and go up to the next floor. Get out and get right back in and go down.

I don't like them either, but when's the last time you heard about a lift failing? I've never heard of it.
