They were all just sitting there. This shopping center is pretty much abandoned other than a Walgreens. It was around 9am and I have never seen that. I have seen geese flying around parking lots, and I have seen lots of other birds in parking lots, but never ducks who were literally just sitting and there were so so so many of them. It was really kind of cute to see. They looked like they do in the water, but I could see the rest of their body.

Also, the Hudson River is probably 8 - 10 miles from this shopping center, so I don't know what water area they were coming from nor why they left. Could it be the cold. The river has been freezing in spots, but aren't they supposed to fly south or something like that. We had a snow storm here today, could them being there have something to do with that?

Any duck experts out there have information on this. Can the poor duckies survive the cold?

Ducks may not migrate if they are getting enough food where they are. It is lack of food, more than temperature, that makes them migrate.
If the river is not a good place for them today, that is why they moved to the parking lot. They can obviously fly that far.
They could probably use a snack; something high in fat would be good in this cold weather. Bread and butter? Until they can get back to their habitat.

They are displaced because of all the snow. They go where they an get out of the weather or find food.

Many ducks and geese are nt migrating lately because people feed them and because of the warmer winter. Now it is colder and they are here.
