What should I do. I have a deskjet 840C from Hewlett Packard

It could possibly be an issue with your preset printer settings. Do you have color printing automatically selected?

Did you remove the little plastic tape that is over the bottom of the black cartdridge?

Double check to make sure.

It has been a while since I have worked on a deskjet, not sure if the printer head is on the cartdridge or not. If it is not on the cartridge, it could be a clogged print head.

I don't know if it would be worth servicing.

Sounds like you have a clogged print head. If you don't have a Clean Printer application that came with the printer use an alcohol swab on the print head (under where the cartridge fits in).

did you replace the black cartridge with the same # that come out of it? take a que tip dip it in alcohol and clean the black ink area

I am sure you took the clear plastic off the cartridge before you put it in right?
If it is inserted right, then there is a good chance you got a bad cartridge.
