I have a Acer aspire 5100 laptop,When I plug the Ethernet cable into the port it doesnt click into the lock position, and can be easily pulled out. I have tried diferent ethernet cables, and none of them lock into position. Is this normal on laptops ,if so is this to allow the cable to be pulled free if the laptop is inadvertantly moved, Or have I just got a faulty port/socket,even though the connection is good. please help.....

Highly doubtful that it is the ethernet port, if the connection works just dont worry. Hey if u said it easily pulls out look at the bright side, if someone pulls the ethernet cord it will pull out and not bring the laptop with it.

The ethernet cable should lock in, as the Ethernet ports are the same on Notebooks and Desktops, Has the clip broken off the top of the cable, as this will make the cable slide out , and are you putting it in the right port (it has a line in the middle with 1 square at the top and 2 on the bottom...Ethernet)

Even without the clip the cable should work as mine clips broken off, still works fine

It should still lock, my guess is that there might be something stuck in there preventing the connector from going into the socket completely.

There is also the possiblility of a faulty socket, but that would be rare.

Just a thought but are you putting it in the ethernet socket and not the phone socket? They are very similar in size and shape

check the port , it should have a kind of notch on top and you make sure ..you r inserting properly. If the notch is not there..check with company. It hsould click into the lockposition for RJ45.

when you insert check whether link is up or not..check the light glow.

thanks,
