The short answer is yes it can run. You will probably need to turn off the extra bells and whistles like Aeroglass and what not, but to just use as an OS for everyday purposes with the basic features, then it should run on 512MB (but feel like using an XP system with 128MB). Now if your CPU is also slow (under 2 GHz) in addition to only having 512MB, then I wouldn't recommend using Vista at all at this point since it will run even slower since Vista uses more resources than XP. Vista still has some bugs/hardware driver problems that need to be worked out with some peripherals and applications (especially older ones) so unless you have a pressing need to have it, then I would stick with XP if it isn't broke. Also keep in mind that Vista is being designed primarily for new and upcoming PC technology (that is powerful enough to handle it) so just like with XP, you will probably end up with it sooner or later anyway and by then new PCs will be better optimized for it and vice versa for the OS support.

It would run, but it would run very, very slowly. You're best bet would be to buy some more RAM, or just stick with what you're running on the machine right now. Vista isn't going to be cool until it's been out for a while. So just give them time to work the kinks out, save up to buy some RAM, buy some RAM, and then worry about Vista.

Vista requires at least 512MB of RAM for Home Basic however it requires 1024MB (1 GB) for Home Premium, Business, or Ultimate. So yes you can run it with 512 MB, however it will operate more efficiently with 1 GB and it also deends on which version you want to run.

When you computer does not have sufficient RAM it will slow down by Temporarity freezing for say 1-5 seconds, so the memory can work out the computing problems. So it does not matter if you defrag, or run anti virus checks, it will slow down. I ran Doom 3 without sufficient RAM, the video was jerky and not smooth running like after I installed the additional RAM> Yea, I was learning.
Now everyone can give opinions. Go to these two sites, bookmark them too, and after a year you may go from being called Grasshopper to Ole Great one. lol

Hi, based on an experience with the final beta version in which I tried this very thing as an experiment, it does work but it is very, very slow - pretty unusable when you're used to a fast PC...
Definitely go for the memory upgrade first if your motherboard has the capability/space.

Oooh thats a tough one. Your computer will run real slow with just 512MB of Ram. You will notice a big difference if you use it with a readyboost capable thumb drive.

Windows Vista requires at least 1GB (minimal) to run it. If you want to run it on 512MB, it would run terribly slowly and most of the time, crash.
Try a memory upgrade.

The minimum is 512 meaning it will run...but the quality is always questionable. They recommend a gig, but knowing Microsoft in general, I would double that further.

It would probably run, albeit extremely slow.
In my opinion, it would not be worth it to try.
