I have lived here in Alaska for over 7 years now. It took me a while but I absolutly fell in love with this place! Now I go to the lower 48 states and I just don't like it down there, I have to come back. The majestic mountains, THE most beautiful water ways I have ever seen and Oh the wild life, Moose, Black bears, brown bears, Mountain goats and doll sheep, the fishing is phenominal!!! To say the least. Where else can you catch a 300 pound Halibut or a salmon big enough to feed your entire family off of just one fish! I mean the fish up here are HUGE! Oh and when you hike up a mountain some 5,000 feet and look out below, it is absolutly breath taking!!! The flight seeing is to die for! Ever seen an ice field some 30 miles long!!! I have. I could go on and on, The Kyaking, Oh man, I could retire some years from now and just do that and I'd be one happy man! I absolutly love to get out there and go Kyaking! Its fantastic! Oh and the Whale watching out of Resurrection bay! Breath taking

The isolation, the cold, the high unemployment, the price of cigarettes and everything else is too high.

I don't think it's that people don't like Alaska, but they don't know much about it or wouldn't necessarily want to live there. I never really hear anybody say anything bad about the state b/c most people have not been there and very few people live there. People who visit Alaska seem to like it a lot though for those things you mentioned. It's really remote and isolated and has only one "major" city. There are no big metropolitan areas for people that prefer more urban or suburban lifestyles. It's great for nature lovers obviously, but not for those that prefer cities or suburbs. It just people's preferences on what they want in where they live. And the fact it's so far away from the rest of the country. If it was closer you probably would have a lot more people living there, but then that could ruin some of the things you love about the state. Maybe it's isolation is a good thing for people like you that prefer nature over cities.

If you enjoy the things you do then Alaska is an ideal place to live. Others don't really like Alaska much because of the cold temps. and shorter summer, along with the odd sunset and sunrise times. It's not called the land of the midnight sun for nothing. It's also been known to rarely be dark all day there. I've read the Alaska also has the highest depression rate of any other state in the U.S. I've never been there myself. I'm just telling you what I've heard others say about it.

akursula, August 2014 no longer if i'm able to help it!!!! - I lived right here via fact 1966 & in basic terms like it, even the dark, long winters are not so undesirable: We gown for it. some excellent summer time months greater suitable than make up for the chilly season! we've gardens, advance our own tomatoes & flora, mow our lawns. Alaska is two.5 cases the size of Texas, yet we've an rather small inhabitants, generally community individuals. via super distance from the decrease 40 8 States, existence is costly right here, wages compensate in basic terms marginally for the version - "thank you" to too lots federal interference. we like our freedom, and the unspoiled, majestic desolate tract. To have moose-meat interior the freezer isn't a million/2-undesirable, the two! we are satisfied to no longer fall sufferer to overpopulation & crime of alternative States. they are asserting that that's a "guy's usa", selfreliant & useful, yet females like it, too! (i'm between the latter.) The state-huge, contemporary college device educates our childrens & provides a good symphony orchestra & many different cultural activities. I like it just fine! In fact, I cannot wait to visit and see the majestic beauty first hand. I watch all I can about Alaska on National Geographic Channel, etc. My parents have been twice, and all they brought me was a lousy T-shirt from Chicken! (I love my Chicken shirt)!
