The first thing you should consider is what you want to do with the computer. Apple products have the best quality and customer support according to Consumer Reports so you get the best for your money, plus they are easier to use and have less trouble with viruses. Also, a PC using author on ZDNet found that to make a PC comparable to a Mac laptop would make the PC more expensive. MacBooks and MacBook Pros are great laptops for doing creative stuff like word processing, photo retouching, playing music, making videos, etc. The only area PC excel in is gaming so if that's your main interest go with a good PC like a Dell laptop, which are rated as the best PCs.

THE SIZE of the laptop! My first laptop was a 15.4 inch, i sold it 6 months after i got it and i got a 17" one after that. Smaller laptops dont get too many upgrade options because of the heat issue (you definitely cant get a good video card for it) Laptop is a pain in the *** to upgrade so make sure you get everything you want. Make sure you get Vista, at least 2 GB of ram. Core 2 Duo to future proof your laptop.

If the computer has vista on it you will want atleast 2 gigs of ram. If it has xp i would suggest 1 gb. Most come with an 80gb hard drive or bigger. I would get built in wireless so you can connect to your colleges network and i would not get one with a processor that is labeled celeron or sempron.
