The United States of America has 50 states or what some other countries might know them as provinces. We may also add Puerto Rico, the Virgin Islands, the Trust Territories, and maybe Micronesia. I also heard talk of making Mexico into states if they agreed, but I'm not completely sure about that. Thats what Alaska and Hawaii used to be, was territories...but there is more territories out there than I listed. Actually, there was 13 colonies at the beggining, later we claimed more land, and Thomas Jefferson, our 3rd president, bought the Louisianna Purchase from France. He later sent Louis and Clark to explore it and maybe fin a Northwest Passage to the west. They started in St.Louis, Missouri and ended somewhere in Oregon. Then they journeyed back. This took nearly 3 years. But thats only a piece of the states history. If you want to know more, I suggest you search it on google or another search engine. You must be foreign.

50 states.
If ever in doubt count the stars on the flag.
The stripes represent the original 13 colonies.
BTW to the person above me, DC correct is not a state, but the USA is divided into 50 states and 1 Federal District, the District of Columbia, aka DC

The USA has 50 states. The district of Columbia has 3 electoral votes in the presidential elections but is not officially a state.

Absolutely, positively, fifty (50).
Now, the "District of Columbia" is usually listed along with the states because it's an important part of the U.S. mainland; it's the area where the city of Washington is. But it's not a state; it's a special district wedged in between Virginia and Maryland, but it's independent.
There are also "territories" and other outlying areas that the U.S. OWNS, but they are not separate states. These include Puerto Rico, American Samoa, Guam, Midway Is., etc.
