I got rid of my PMT 15 years ago taking evening primrose oil. I take it daily..if I miss a few days then I get the symptoms that month so I'm always careful to take it.

You need to take it continuously for around two months before you see the full benefit. I had awful PMT, very irritable and moody..I hated myself and I don't think my family were keen on me either!

Worth trying!

I was taught the rule of 70%, i.e. each of these will help about 70% of women.

Vitamin B6- dose required is 50 to 100 micrograms/day. The over the counter tabs are only 10 micrograms, so see your GP for that strength.

Progesterone - a hormone only available on prescription

Diuretics taken for a few days pre-menstrally. The most useful is spironolactone which is chemically similar to female sex hormone.

Prozac was used for a while, there was evidence that it worked, however since the drug fell under the media spotlight the manufacturers decided to remove this indication from the data sheet. Despite this some GPs will still (as they are allowed to do) prescribe it for this purpose.

Evening primrose is often advocated for PMS and many people are tempted to use it as it is, unlike the medications above, available over the counter. Unfortunately Gamolenic acid, the active ingredient has been shown to be pretty worthless for PMS. It does however produce a modest improvement in the isolated symptom of cyclic mastalgia (pre period brest pain).

Evening Primrose Oil and Vitamin B complex.

If it's really bad, you could ask your GP to prescribe Sertraline (an SSRI) for you. It's an antidepressant, but it's proven to help PMT. I can vouch for it too... it helped me no end.

"SSRIs have become the "initial drug of choice for severe PMS" The drug most widely studied is fluoxetine at doses of 20-60 mg/d. Other drugs include sertraline, paroxetine, clomipramine, fluvoxamine, and nefadozone."

"RICHMOND, Va., Oct. 16 (UPI) -- Women with moderate to severe premenstrual syndrome may benefit from taking a low dose of an anti-depressant drug, say U.S. researchers.

Researchers at Virginia Commonwealth University led the study of 300 women with PMS performed at 22 sites around the country.

The drug tested was sertraline, a selective serotonin reuptake inhibitor that has been approved for the treatment of premenstrual dysphoric disorder, a severe form of PMS."

Have a look at the links below, they give you more information, and you'll get lots of stuff to have a look at before you make your mind up.

Good luck with it, I hope you find something that works for you. xxx

Vitamin B6 is great and keeping your blood sugar levels stable. Failing that get rid of men, kids, your boss, other road users, ques at the shops, other shoppers, any one demanding your attention or help.........need I carry on with this? I think you get the picture :D Actually now is a good time to say exactly what you have always wanted to say to those irritating hangers on that you are normally afraid of hurting their feelings, PMT makes you not care about these things, go for it, that will make you feel better!!

Paracetemol & ibuprofen take one or the other every 2 hours. A warm hot water bottle on the tummy can also help a bit. Otherwise, try the pill to reduce the severity of the periods - this is what worked for me having had really painful periods.
