What I mean is sometimes I feel like some kind of weirdo because of the way people react to me... It's like people think I am some kind of genius or something and I'm not.. I just have a large store of general knowledge about alot of subjects.. astronomy, botany, ornithology, biology, zoology etc etc. But when I say something like.. "Look, see that group of stars? that is the constellation Canis Major, and that star is called Sirius." People look at me like I am a freakin alien.. and then its always "How did you know that?" either that or they just completely ignore what I say, and continue talking about themselves. Why do other people think it is strange to know about the world around you? It seems that others are threatened by knowledgeable, curious people and ostracize or ignore them because of it.. at least thats how I see it. Does anyone else feel like that sometimes, Or is it just me?

Yeah.. you're not alone. I do feel like I don't belong, among my own people, sometimes even in my family. The way I think is light years ahead of most people, and it's sometimes hard to slow down and explain things to people - things that I take for granted that people should know.. but don't. But it is a gift that I treasure, and I think I have to use this gift to help others who are less fortunate. When you have a gift.. such as a high IQ (i.e. 140+), you have a responsibility to nurture it, and to give back to society.

YES! All the time, thank god, I am not alone. I have a habit of absorbing totally useless information and then just telling people about random things that no one ever knows about (like for example did you know bulls are colorblind?) my friends make fun of me all the time when I do that, they're like "and that was Caitlin's useless tidbit of the day!" But I think it's great to do stuff like that and notice and observe the world we live in, beyond myspace, email, and teen drama. It also annoys me because I AM not by any means a genius not even close. However, in the end I think it's good we are the way we are, because atleast we're different.

You are hanging around the wrong people. Join clubs about the subjects you like or take some college classes in them. The others there will share your love of those particular groups of knowledge.

"they just completely ignore what I say" It's possible that the people you talk to are jealous, because you hold a lot of knowledge that most are not familiar with.
The people who believe you are a genius are probably just admiring you. Their reactions are natural to them because you are different from them, but everyone is different. That's something most people don't grasp. It's OK to speak your mind, but don't let those reactions get to you.

In your family, you were taught that knowledge is important. It sounds like your friends have been raised to believe that it is cool to be stupid.

What you have to do is work at using your knowledge to embarrass the stupid people, with the aim of shaming them into working at not being so stupid. For example, with your ability to retain information, I suspect you could easily remember all the things that the stupid kids are buying and talking about right now, like NorthFace jackets. Well, when they quit wearing their NorthFace jackets, and the first one of them says something like, "How did you know that?" you should say, "The same way I knew your NorthFace jacket would end up in the GoodWill Box, as will your (whatever jacket they are wearing now)."
