Copywriteing a song costs 45 dollars a pop, and right now im still a starving artist. What can I do to protect my music. I know mailing it to myself and not opening it, but is there another way?

Actually you can make a compilation of several songs on a CD or cassette and copywrite the entire album. Check the Library of Congress web site. Things constantly change so my advise might be dated. If you do a common-law (mailing it to yourself) make sure you send it registered with return receipt requested. You might want to enclose an affidavit (notarized & signed by a whitness). You'll have to sign for it when it arrives. Technically once a song is recorded it has a defacto copywright but then it must be documented in some fashion to prove the date it was recorded.

You can have them notorized for free at your local bank. Most banks will offer this service for free to their clients. Having your original lyrics and music notorized with the date will prove you originated them.

you can put a number of songs on one of their selected mediums and register it as a collection instead of registering them one at a time. other than that, the mailing it to yourself is the only other way that i know of.

I think you can self publish them in print somewhere like Cafepress. They should become your words once published.
