maintainence required light is for regular oil and filter changes. take it in when the light comes on, have the service performed and the light reset. no need to get it done earlier. waste of money. 3000 miles is a little short now. light will come on at roughly 5000 miles. do it then. 3000 was necessary years ago when oil wasn't as good. technology is a wonderful thing and the conventional oil now will last 5000 easily. synthetics 10,000.

Lots of things. Generally when the light comes on you take it in for service. It can be a very cheap or a tad expensive depending on the exact problem.

BTW the check engine/maintainence required lights are refered some times as idiot lights.

That "idiot light" is attached to the computer inside your car. The computer is attached to numerous pieces of equipment and lights. When just 1 piece fails, the computer notices the fault and lights the "idiot light".

that means its time to have the oil changed. it is preset at the factory to come on after so many miles and/or by the information it reads from the car when youre driving. but be careful. most of the ones ive seen come on about 4 - 5 thousand miles after the oil change (if it is reset at that time). but those go over the recommended 3 month/3000 mile interval for oil changes, and going over will definitely tear up the engine. ive been working at an auto lube shop for many years, and most customers i see that wait to come in when that light comes on are usually 1000 miles overdue for the oil change. i recommend go by the window sticker or your personal log as to the oil changes and do then at the 3month/3k mile interval. it will save on your engine in the long run.

That light only runs off the speedometer. It runs off a counter and set to turn on every 6000 km (3000 miles??) Nothing is wrong with your vehicle, it is put there as a reminder to bring it to the dealer for regular scheduled maintenance. To turn it off, put key in ignition turn it one notch, press and hold odometer reset button and, while holding it, turn ignition another notch. light will blink for about 10 seconds, then go out. Good for another 6000 kms.
