Was that movie over the edge or what? I wasn't sure if the movie was a comedy, a scifi, or a wasted trip to Blockbuster.
Don't you think sensationalizing an issue like that does more harm than good?

It was way over the top with the whole man caused global warming hooey. However, I enjoy the "epic Apocalypse" premise no matter how corny it is so aside from the blatant political agenda, it was fun to watch idiot teenagers run from wolves and try to avoid the -150 degree air (oh boy!) freezing everything. Oh, and the "friendly" 3rd world helping us out (yeah right). We'd invade and ethnically cleanse if there was that much at stake.

Well, first off, it's a movie, and they exaggerate for effect. Right? Their idea was that warmer temperatures increased the melting of Arctic ice. This caused a cold fresh water ocean current to spread southward. This caused changes in ocean currents which then produced a super storm. This storm brought down super cooled air from high in the atmosphere which froze everything that it touched. Meanwhile the water and ice flowing in to the ocean caused a rise in sea level which came in one giant wave, flooding New York, where our hero's were at the time. So since it is a movie, they can have it both ways. On the one hand there is this super cold storm which is freezing all the helicopters, (nice special effects huh?) and melting ice which is causing the ocean to rise up into a huge wave which puts down the Statue of Liberty and floods famous sites in New York. (nice special effects huh?) The Earth is a huge, self regulating weather engine. The power to drive it comes from the sunlight which brings energy by the gajillions of watts (I am sure that is the correct scientific term...I think...) Anyway, where ever is facing the Sun is getting warmed by it. But the question is, 'Where does the heat go?' And the answer is, 'Most of it goes back out into space.' The result is the average temperature of the Earth's atmosphere. Global warming is the result of an increase in CO2 in the air which acts like a blanket and keeps more heat in the atmosphere. Just check out the web sites which sell flowers to gardeners. In the last few decades, the areas suitable for certain kinds of plants has steadily moved northward. You can check, but I think it is about 2 bands. That means that plants that used to be planted in the South can now be planted in a state in the North. Woo! The South will Rise Again! Whereas the cold winter used to kill off those flowering plants, now they can survive further North. So Global warming is not necessarily a bad thing. However if there is more energy saved in the atmosphere, storms which use this energy can grow faster and larger. We can expect more and larger hurricanes, and tornadoes in the US. It is simply that there is more energy for them to feed on in the atmosphere. But Canada isn't going to suffer so much. It will have a longer growing season and less harsh winters. This process will be reflected all over the globe. Some area will benefit, and others will suffer. More heat does not only make more hurricanes. It also makes more rain. Maybe the desertification of the Sahara Desert and the Gobi Desert will be reversed. The Sahara used to be a grassland. Maybe it will be again. ;-D But the low level islands all over the oceans along with low lying coastal cities, especially Venice and the Netherlands, will face huge problems. Some places will disappear. In ancient geological times, the middle of America was a large shallow sea. Maybe it will come to that again. Hmm... St. Louis Surfer's and Scuba Divers Association! Remember! You read it here first!

Of course it was over the top, it was a Hollywood film. I liked the special effects, though. Seeing the Statue of Liberty buried in snow was interesting.

To be honest, I thought the movie stunk. The writing was bad, the directing was bad the acting was bad and the "science" was non existent.
