in the philippine history, he was killed in MActan Island in Cebu and the killing was credited to a warrior named Lapu-Lapu. Many people believed him to be the person responsible for Magellan's death but many historians claim that he was just credited for the bravery done because he happened to be the most popular in the group of warriors against the conquerors at that time.

I find some of the answers here funny... the portuguese answer and the grouper fish answer. You guys rock the history upside down :p
Don't they usually do that? I mean Generals and leaders always get to be acknowledged and never the "actual" soldiers who fought in the battle. So what's the fuss about? 500 years of history says it's Lapu-lapu who killed Magellan, so I'll stick with it ;)

Magellan joined forces with Datu Zula to fight against Lapu-Lapu. It was in this battle, the Battle of Mactan, that Magellan was killed. The actual person that killed him was just a fighter on Lapu-Lapu's army.

Magellan was killed after he reached Cebu. The islanders were friendly and he gave the local people gifts from Spain, but the king of the island of Mactan wouldn't pay tributes. He fought the tribe and got killed on April 27 1521.

Contrary to popular belief Magellan wasn't killed by Lapu-Lapu. He fell when he was hit with a poisonous arrow by one of Lapu Lapu's men, then the other fighters gathered around him and speared him to death.

Sorry, it was not Lapu-Lapu but some of his warriors that killed Magellan.
There is a difference.
Hey Gameplan 20 plus years of history says Marcos was a war hero. Are you going to stick with that?

The initial peace with the Philippine natives proved misleading. Magellan was killed in the Battle of Mactan against indigenous forces led by Lapu-Lapu on April 27, 1521. Antonio Pigafetta, a wealthy tourist who paid to be on the Magellan voyage, provided the only extant eyewitness account of the events culminating in Magellan's death, as follows:
When morning came, forty-nine of us leaped into the water up to our thighs, and walked through water for more than two cross-bow flights before we could reach the shore. The boats could not approach nearer because of certain rocks in the water. The other eleven men remained behind to guard the boats. When we reached land, [the natives] had formed in three divisions to the number of more than one thousand five hundred people. When they saw us, they charged down upon us with exceeding loud cries... The musketeers and crossbow-men shot from a distance for about a half-hour, but uselessly... Recognizing the captain, so many turned upon him that they knocked his helmet off his head twice... A native hurled a bamboo spear into the captain's face, but the latter immediately killed him with his lance, which he left in the native's body. Then, trying to lay hand on sword, he could draw it out but halfway, because he had been wounded in the arm with a bamboo spear. When the natives saw that, they all hurled themselves upon him. One of them wounded him on the left leg with a large cutlass, which resembles a scimitar, only being larger. That caused the captain to fall face downward, when immediately they rushed upon him with iron and bamboo spears and with their cutlasses, until they killed our mirror, our light, our comfort, and our true guide. When they wounded him, he turned back many times to see whether we were all in the boats. Thereupon, beholding him dead, we, wounded, retreated, as best we could, to the boats, which were already pulling off.[5]

Well, I am Portuguese and I am absolutely appalled at the way the Filipino people treated and killed that lovely old Portuguese General!! --- Just kidding... (not about the fact that I am Portuguese, though). I actually think it is cool that a Portuguese was in charge of a Spanish expedition, those many years ago (LOL) 'cause they couldn't do it themselves. ---BTW, I visited that History Museum in Makati/Mania Philippines and saw the beautiful Caravel ship of the type in which the Portuguese went around the World.
I want to thank "dramaquee" (above) for her post. Interesting.

One of Lapu-Lapu's men. Lapu-Lapu got the credit of killing Magellan, because he was the leader. (^_^)
