A transgender individual is one who does not fit into traditional definitions of gender (gender being the way one looks and behaves). There are many 'varieities' of transgendered people, so to speak, from those who feel they embody both masculine and feminine characteristics and hence aren't truly one or the other, those who feel they are both, neither, or are a 'third gender', so to speak, some cross-dressers and other folk who don't necessarily think of themselves as men or women in the way that society defines men and women. They do not alter their bodies with surgery or hormones, however.

Transsexuals usually have gender dysphoria, where they feel a mind-body dissonance (that they were born in the wrong body), and they may take steps to remedy that with surgery and hormones. Oftentimes transgender individuals will become transsexuals, and some transsexuals, even after their transitions, will realize that they are transgender, and that although they love and prefer their new bodies, they still have traits of each within them (for a wonderful discussion of this, read some of Kate Bornstein's work).

Transvestites enjoy wearing the clothing of the opposite sex. They may or may not be for sexual pleasure or not. Some only do it in privacy for that purpose, others may enjoy going out in public and see it as non-sexual. The main point is that transvestites (crossdressers) do not want to be the opposite sex.

Transvestite dresses like the opposite sex mostly for their own sexual pleasure and needs.

Transgender is someone who is born with the identity of the opposite gender ie; a man on the outside and female on the inside, therefore they are transgendered. They need to be connected to the body they were not born in and quite often will have reassignment surgery.

Transexual is someone who has gone for gender reassignment surgery or a least part of that surgery and lives as the opposite gender that they were born

NCguy.........actually it starts with therapy, as to be able to even get the testosterone or hormones, they have to go through 6months-1year of therapy, have a letter of reccomendation, have the hormone treatmenst for atleast 6 months, have a letter of recomendation from the therapis, the doc (administering the shots) stating that you are THEN ready to have surgery done........

it's a very LONG, EXPENSIVE process.
