Are you people serious?! For some reason, I get the idea that many of you don't even come from California. Jeeez. Such unprecise answers.
Depending on where you are, there'd be boutiques (which exist in downtown areas, and beachtowns as well as old towns)
In malls? females tend to go into: Forever 21,Nordstrom Rack, Sillouette, Wetseal, Rave, Pacific Sun, Anchorblue, Abercrombie&Fitch, Hollister, Aeropostale, and some more places that have unknown names but similar clothing.
The wealthy tend to look into the department stores like: Macy's, Sears, Bloomingdale's, Nordstrom's especially, JCPenny's, etc...
And if they're REALLY wealthy... anything down Rodeo Dr. in Beverly Hills.
Sports wear: Nike, BEBE sports, Target, Walmart, you know...
Dark/Goth/Punk wear: Hot Topic...
Now.. for good deals/decent prices for a variety of good clothing? There's: Marshall's, Ross, and TJ Maxx, Kohl's.
There are many different stores for a variety of different people.

Just wear whatever you have now. Shorts, t-shirts, summer dresses whatever! My uncle lives in California & I go visit him every other summer & I just wear whatever. There is not a certain "fashion" that they wear. Also remember that since you are going in May it might be chili & you should bring jackets & long pants. Oh & dont plan on going swimming. I tried to last June & the water was freezing fortunately we had wet suits & it was ok. The water doesnt usually get warm there til July. Anyways I hope this helps! Have fun & Good Luck :)

depends entirely on what part of california you are going to. i live in san francisco area wine country. and we are totaly laid back casual. In may weather is just starting to get warm. so you might be able to do shorts. Or capris, jeans, chinos. I tend to wear stuff from eddie bauer, j crew, nordstroms, etc.
Napa average hi is 75 and low 49
LA average hi is 75 and low 58
San Diego hi is 69 and low 56
San Francisco hi is 67 and low is 51
You will most likely need a light jacket of some kind. I usually wear sweatshirt or something fleecy.
So cal is a whole different thing. my best friend is from san diego, and i wouldn't be caught dead in half the stuff she wears. way too revealing for me. she wears shorts and cami tank top things virtually year round. it is a lot warmer down there than up here. and I think that so cal is more dressed up than nor cal. especially with the hollywood scene. you will find more trendy stuff in LA.
and whoever said hollister the city is in so cal is out of their mind. hollister is in northern california, just south of san jose. IT IS NOT SO CAL. it is tiny little farming community right next to gilroy.

It depends on what part of California you are going to. I'm from Orange County and right now I live in San Diego. Most girls are wearing shorts with come cute sandals/flip-flops like the Rainbow brand. For tops we like to wear tank tops, polo's and just regular T's. Jeans are also very much in too. You can never go wrong with a tank top and a pair of jeans. We also love our UGGS!
Everyone else above has pretty much the same idea...

Anything from Abercrombie to Hollister. Since those clothes are expensive, you could try a store like Forever 21 or even American Eagle. But Hollister would probably be the most "californian" out of all of those stores. Hollister is named after a town in California (hollister, california) and there logo is "So Cal" or "SO Cali". If I were you I would go with hollister. Since you don't want to spend tons of cash, shop in the sale or clearance section of the store. Have fun in California!!

CA is very laid back. Lots of shorts (short ones if you have the body) and tank tops. Have a pair of flip flops. Go for the surfer skater look. Anything by Roxy, Quicksilver, etc... You can find these cheap at places like Ross or go to a skate shop when they're having a sale. Also, check out Old Navy. Their clothes are pretty cheap and they all look good for CA. Enjoy your trip!
