Tolkien's characters were based on no one. They came strictly from his great and grand imagination.

Maybe he just made them up. People didn't have to base their characters on others back in the day, because not alot of fantasy people were in.
I'd think they were just made up.
Actually I change my mind. They could have been him and his crush.

I believe they were based on characters from world wars-if you are familiar with his works you will see alot of similarities-
not necessary people!

I don't know that he based any one character on any one other figue, but a lot of the themes are borrowed: elves, goblins dwarves, trees.... I do know that he thought of his wife as Luthien (from 'The Silmarillion') and himself as Beren.

im not completly sure about those two but i know alot of the character ideas came from norse and celtic mythology
