You actually "NEED" very few things but here's some other very common things that most people have:
wipes (we like Kirkland {Costco} brand
crib
changing table
dresser (our baby dresser doubles as changing table)
diaper pail (Diaper Genie~only really good until they start solids)
clothes hamper
Dreft (infant laundry detergent)
swing (I like the Graco open top)
bouncer (I like Fisher Price Ocean Wonders)
mobile (ours is by Sassy, definitely get the one with remote)
sleepers
baby nail clippers
diaper rash ointment (A&D)
bottle of Febreze (some of the diapers STINK!)
board books
classical CDs to play in baby's room
toy box
mini hamper to carry tos from room to room
tummy time mat
boppy pillow
baby wash (I like the milk bath lavendar)
baby lotion
hooded towel
2 crib sheets and waterprood crib pads
swaddling blankets
car seat cover (I love ours by Kiddapotomus)
baby monitor (get one with 2 channels so you don't get interference)
stroller

Shopping for baby can be as expensive or inexpensive as you make it...you can go ALL out and get everything under the sun, or you can make do with a few essentials. Here's some tips on "making do."
-Look into second hand baby stores. Look for high chairs, monitors, tubs, strollers, clothing, blankets, etc. Although we were advised against it, we bought a used car seat and I contemplated buying a used crib...
-Look into the "Tuesday Morning" stores, or stores that sell overstocked items. We found crib sheets and baby clothing for unbeatable prices!
-Check Ebay.
-Have Grandma sew a bed skirt, bumper pad (not totally necessary), and quilt (and some clothes maybe)
-Have you set up a regristry?- I like Target :-)
THINGS:
Layett (baby cloths)...many (7-10 or more) receiving blankets, 5-8 onesies/body suits, maybe some gowns for sleeping, sleepers with hand pockets and closed feet. Don't get too many newborn sizes, unless you have a premie. Some babies are born to big for newborn sizes... KEEP YOUR RECIETS! I like Carters brand because they are all cotten and tagless.
Sleep... you have MANY options, but crib seems to be standard.
crib sheets, water proof mattress pad, mattress (I prefer foam), blanket, mobile is nice. You could get away with something less expensive, though. Talk to Dr. about it.
Poop and Pee... you have MANY options: saving money? use a changing pad on your bed. Buy generic diapers (not too many newborn size...), use damp wash cloths/cotton ball for wipes, diaper rash ointment, and diaper disposal (heard the diaper genie II is great, but refills can be spendy!)
Eat... starter nurser kit (bottles with nipples), burp cloths (cloth diapers apparently do the trick, and they're cheap!) and maybe some bibs. Apparently a "boppy" is a nice item to have for feeding. Later you will want a chair for feeding...once again, you have many options! You will save money if you b-feed, but you'll have to rent a pump to keep up your milk supply (when you go back to work). Formula works too.
Bathing... saving money? use a sponge insert in your own tub or get one of those baby tubs. some baby wash. some baby wash cloths. some baby towels with the cute little hoods.
On the go... car seat suitable for infant. diaper bag. stroller that reclines for infant.
Soothing... apparently the swing is a must. bouncer might work. baby music. something that produces sounds in the womb. baby toys. FREE: skin to skin contact, mommy's voice, relatives, and some wisdom from a relative or friend!!!
Good luck! That totally sucks that the bio dad ran off. He doesn't know what he's missing. Well, it's not the worse thing for you because it leaves the door open for a better daddy that will truly care. :-)

What you NEED and all the crap people say you'll need are two different things.
Things you'll NEED:
Little blankets
Burp Cloths (babies puke ALOT)
Clothes
Carseat (or a travel system)
Stroller
Bassinet/Travel Crib/Crib (something for him to sleep in)
Baby Bath Tub
Wash Cloths
Baby wash & lotion
Diapers/Wipes
Nasal Aspirator (snot sucker)
Thermometer
Baby Monitor ("Crystal Clear" monitor at target works great and its only 16 bucks)
If you aren't breastfeeding
(and I highly recommend that you do, trust me..it's alot easier to "whip em out" in the middle of the night than it is to run to the kitchen and make a bottle while the baby is screaming)
Formula/Bottles (don't buy too much because you don't know if your baby will be able to digest the kind you buy...it may take a few tries before you find one that works...another reason to breastfeed)
The rest is just kinda extra or fun stuff...people will say changing table...but you can change them on the bed or on the couch. Bouncers, playpens swings all that stuff is good...but not really necessary...don't stress on it now.

There is really very little that a newborn baby NEEDS.
You'll need a carseat.
You'll need a method of feeding - breastfeeding is not only cheaper, but healthier for you and your child as well. You do not *need* bottles or formula or pacifiers at all.
Babe will need appropriate clothing for your climate.
Diapers - cloth is cheaper overall, but the initial $$ outlay is often more.
You do not need to even consider any form of baby food at all until the baby is at least 6 months old. At that point, it's cheaper to make your own anyhow.
Some place to sleep. In bed along side you is perfect. Keep the blankets down low so not to cover babe's face.
A sling or wrap type carrier - might seem frivolous right now, but it really makes life much easier once baby is born.

You will NEED
diapers (1-2 packs Newborn only...they grow out of them fast...)
wipes, about a box every two weeks or so is what we go through, I have a 7 1/2 week old.
Bottles, & bottle brush to clean them, make sure you boil the bottles before the first use (bottles & nipples need boiling)
Something to sleep in (crib/bassinet/playpen)
clothes, clothes and more clothes...
Carseat, of course...even if you don't have a car you need one to leave the hospital.
Formula...my daughter goes through about 9 cans a month (13 oz powdered type)
Alot of people mentioned thing you don't HAVE TO HAVE and some things are totally useless...
Changing tables, useless..it's easy to change the baby on your bed, couch, floor etc. The table is just an additional cost and I don't know about you but I am not made of money.
Baby Tub, don't need it yet...you can use the kitchen sink. I place a towel in the sink so baby doesn't slip and slid, and you also need to hold her, it's tricky the first few times, but you will learn and you will be ok. Be sure you have everything you need for bathtime (towel to dry baby, a diaper (my baby pee's every time right after I take her out). Baby Head to Toe wash, and a cloth.
You can join BabyZone.com I found that to be helpful...it gives you people to talk to who are due in the month that you are...
Good Luck and Congrats!!

OK honey, you need a crib or playpen to sleep in, blankets, burp cloths/ towels, socks, a swing (trust me), Multiply the diapers by about 100 just for the first couple of months, a stroller, teething toys, hats, pacifiers (optional), the list goes on and on. If you need help there are organizations that you can sign up with that will help you out. You can ask at your next doctors appt. Also, now is a good time to pick out a pediatrician. There are helpful lists at babyzone.com, if you want to check them out, they also have links to those helpful organizations. I wish you the best. God Bless!

Really, all you need is a carseat, diapers, breastmilk or formula, some blankets, clothes, and a cozy place for your baby to sleep. Otherwise, most of the stuff they tell you that you need in the books is absolute hogwash. All a newborn wants to do is eat, sleep and poop. I wish you a lot of luck.
