I am travelling to Laos/Thailand/France and China in June this year; it's my way of reconnecting with my roots. I am half Laotian (a small country next to Thailand), with my other half being Chinese, Indian, and French.

I came to Canada when I was 4, I am now 24, haven't gone back to any country...

My parents tell me I'll never make it...that I've been so spoiled in Canada that I'll cry at the sight of an outhouse.

Are they right are these countries that much different than Canada?

I have never been in Asia... but have been to many other countries.... you will have some culture shock for sure... do not openly compair... just do as best you can to go by the customs where you find them... it will be hardest if you get away from the big cities and out where the real people live...it will not be easy if you are on your own and not with a tour group... but if you actualy can interact with the locals and get to know them you will be better off and learn so much moer than with just a "guided tour"... do the best you can to get some of the language as best you can... but most of all be polite and know their customs and respect their way... you will have to eat food you will not like... and sanitation is not good in most rural areas... take your meds with you and some water tablets and such...your system will get out of whack for a time espacialy if you are with the people in the real world of the country and not the tourist areas...It is a whole other world you are going to... be prepaired to learn a lot...

Having married a Mongolian, and hearing the stories of her relatives who spent time in the States and returned to Mongolia. Yes, you are definitely in for a "change" in so far as a lesser degree of technology. But what an opportunity to really see who YOU are without the "modern world" defining that for you.

yes, they are very different but that doesn't make them bad. too bad your parents don't have very much faith in you. go discover your roots and yourelf. you maybe surprized, and your parents might learn a thing or two by your example
