I work with someone who constantly makes really bad assumptions and turns everything I say into something
negative. I have to explain everthing in total detail to her
and it makes me feel like I'm on the defensive side. How
can I get around this?

The problem is hers, don't make her problem yours, meaning, don't allow her behavior to affect how you feel about yourself. It's lonely being negative if your the only one. Get it!!!!!......she has to "pull someone in". Be direct and to the point. If she continues to make something bad of what you are saying simply tell her you feel as though no matter what you say she misunderstands. Explain you would like to be professional with her and ask what can be done so that the two of you get along better. She will either attempt to resolve an underlying issue with you, or learn quickly you know what she is doing and that it can no longer affect you. You have moved on.

Honestly, If its not your boss it should not concern you. But we are blessed with the constant pessimists. In those situations it's always great to keep your distance away from them. Always stay strong in your beliefs. This person sounds like she will turn any positive aspect in your life negative. Point blank this person sounds miserable, and she will have to learn to see things half full instead of half empty or almost gone. Something you probably can't help her in. You may help her down the line, but she is the one who would need the change.

Well.. it depends on how important the subject matter is, and whether it needs to be clarified..

If it is important, then yes, I will try to clarify. If not, I'll just say.. "No, this is what I meant." and leave it at that. It's not your problem if they feel otherwise - you can't control other people's minds, so they will think whatever they want to think. Just move on to the next subject or stop talking to an argumentative person.

People like that are so annoying! Generally they ENJOY arguing..it's fruitless to talk to them.
