Listen to no one else but me and you will do fine. First go to this site http://www.seasite.niu.edu/Tagalog/ and get familiar with the language, which by the way is now termed Pilipino, another name for Tagalog. Secondly, explore the web for penpal sites centering on the Philippines. Just put pinoy pen pals in search, but steer clear of anything that looks or feels commercial, because it will be mail order bride stuff. I started with pen pals, female, and now I am married happily to a Pinay. Just start pen paling and have fun, and practice some phrases with them. It is really a fascinating and colorful culture. Take care.

Post an ad in Craig's List looking for a native speaker. Ten or twenty dollars an hour is a good rate or call the Philippine consulate and ask for a referral. Often, someone from the staff will offer lessons to earn extra money. Also, check out Rosetta Stone language series. The tapes are expensive. I bought a the tapes for Bahasa Indonesian on eBay for 1/2 the retail price. Good luck.

It really depends on how you learn. Some people can learn languages by themselves with just a book and a CD but most people especially older people need intensive instruction with the help of an instructor to help them master a new language.

Also you can learn a language but if you dont use it on a daily basis you will forget it just as quick as you learn it. Learning a new language is a full time job and the older we get the more time it takes to master it. I would suggest moving to the philippines and hiring someone who will teach you. You can probably find someone to teach you there full time for less than $200 per month.
