I have a unique spreadsheet for my business and I do not want an employee from downloading it and selling it to one of my competitors.

Buy a thumbdrive - you can get a 32mb one from Target for like $8, and keep it on that instead - and keep the drive on your person.

Don't try password protecting or hiding it in a folder, because both of those methods require the would-be thief to be technologically inept. It is extremely simple to break Office password protection (there are free downloadable programs that do this) and anyone can search for *.xls, and select "display hidden files" to find every spreadsheet on the laptop.

I understand, I was in a similar situation. Put it into Google spreadsheets online - you can transfer it easily from Excel or your other software. Google spreadsheets is set up so YOU decide who gwets to see your spreadsheet. The other way is to add a "lock" to the Excel spreadsheet, which is easy enough but with Google you get the advantage of being able to access, edit, print your business spreadsheet from ANYPLACE you have Internet access and log in with your secret password. And if you do NOT like the Google option for any reason, HERE is how to do it in Excel: http://j-walk.com/ss/excel/faqs/protectionFAQ.htm

Have fun, and thanks for a good question!

just set up multiple passworded accounts and check the do not share files option

if they have to use the spreadsheet - then you can't as long as they have possession of the laptop - they can just load it into a USB flash memory as well as e-mail ( if you can open it you can copy it - any software that prevented making a copy would not allow you to change a field - enter data )

The easy way is to not put it on that computer. Purchase a USB drive, keep it on the USB drive and take the USB drive with you when you leave.

Password protect it. So if they download it, they won't be able to open it.
