My fiancee and I are considering getting a dog, but don't want anything over 25 pounds or that will get over 25 pounds. We really don't like Chihuahua breeds because they are too yappy. We'd really like a quiet, small dog that will still let me know when something isn't right around the house. Maybe even a protective small breed that isn't the yappy type. I'd prefer a breed on the larger side of small soley because I wouldn't want the dog to be fragile or scared of bigger people since my fiancee is quite a tall man. I was also wondering if a cat is any easier then a dog as far as training and keeping in a home. We'd much rather a dog because I have allergies to some cats. If anyone can help with naming some breeds to look into that'd be great.

Miniature Schnauzers, Corgis, West Highland White Terriers, Scottish Terriers, and Pugs would fit the bill. Keep in mind Pugs shed something heinous though. Corgies can go over the 25 pounds but they're stocky, low to the ground dogs so they don't look as heavy as they really are. The Corgies and Scotties seem to be the least popular with the backyard breeders and millers, so tend to be of better temperments and have fewer health issues than the Schnauzers and Westies on average. I had a Mini Schnauzer as a kid, and I was allergic to everything, but she didn't bother me. The vet recommended the breed to us. She was yappy when strangers came over though. Scotties, Westies, and Schnauzers will all require regular trips to the groomer.

Jack Russell Terriers are often described as a dog in need of an exorcism. Pomeranians are adorable with huge attitudes but are also notoriously difficult to house train, plus they're fragile dogs. Some people love them but I wouldn't have either one.

There are dozens of breeds that fall into your size catagory, thos are just the ones I have personal experience with. :)

I have had a mixed Silky-Poodle and after he was trained he was not much of a barker. I live in an apartment. He was 14 when he went to doggie heaven. (still miss him). He was about 10 lbs.

Now I have a mixed dachshound (who knows). He has long legs (I mean really who knows). He does not have a yappy bark. He is 10ish now and basically doesn't bark unless he hears someone close to my windows or door. He also barks if he is mad at me but he only barks once, waits awhile, and then barks again. He weighs about 27 lbs.

I obtained both of these dogs from shelters. They both had their issues. Both of them never were completely housebroken. I believe my second dog had abdominal surgery which had something to do with his bladder (again who knows).

Terrier type dogs can be very yappy but I believe any dog can be trained not to bark. I would say "no barking" over and over again until they stopped. Do not holler at them because they think you are barking with them and therefore okay to bark. Just say it in a moderate voice. When they finish say "Good boy/girl" and immediately give them a small treat. After awhile you don't need to give them a treat. When you want them to bark say at someone at the door. Don't say "no barking".

Now, training a dog to be completely housebroken is beyond me because my dogs have always done "their business" behind my back or when I am not in the house. Maybe someone else can answer that one for you.

Boston Terrier HANDS DOWN
They are almost human like in their emotions and expressions!
They don't get too big usually around 15 lbs.
If you still want the dog to alert you if someone is at the door, youre best bet is a female. They're the best companions, not high maintenance as far as health problems in the breed, great with kids, great in a house or apartment....I could go on and on :)

Yep a Jack Russel they're sturdy little dogs with the middle of a large dogs. Or a Miniature Bull Terrier they arrive in extremely a small length now a days. The Jacks are particularly smart severe skill dogs with the middle of a loin & mind of monkey I swear, lol. The min Bullies are very comparable to a commonly used Bull Terrier opinionated & obdurate yet unswerving as.

Go to www.akc.org and look through the toy group... they were bred specifically for being companion animals.

there are smallish dogs in most of the groups - each breed will list temperment and size etc. Talk to breeders or people active in the dog show world - they can refer you to reputable breeders, you can meet the dogs and get a real sense of what the personality of the breed you choose will be.

Yeap get a Maltese or a Yorkie. Better yet get a Morkie. (Maltese mixed with a Yorkie). They're adorable and small. Or a Bichon Frise. Maybe a Daschound or a miniature Poodle.

I don't know if they are all yappy or not, but I grew up with schnauzers. They are better than a lot of dogs as far as allergy-suffering goes (my brother wasn't affected by them, and he sure is by long-haired dogs!), and ours were very alert and protective. One of them did bark a lot, though.
