My wife and I were just talking about Texas.
If we were to make the move down there it would more than likely be the Dallas/Ft. Worth area. It has a great climate (I am from Chicago, so anywhere else is great) and the economy is booming there.
Good luck!

Texas is probably the best state in the union!
I have lived all over the United States. My Dad was a construction blaster and I lived everywhere! People who do not like Texas have just not lived in the right spot! I live in Houston TX now, and if you don't like one area drive a mile or two down the road and it is just like being in a different place. We are a diverse individualistic bunch down here. West Texas is wide open and great for people who want to live like survivalists...lol.
The hill country is beautiful and the valley (south area) is also very beautiful. People are friendly here, I often describe Houston as having a small town flavor in a big city atmosphere. Jobs are plentiful, opportunities are good here. The electric rates and the insurance could be a little lower, but we are working on that!
I completely understand the phrase "I may not have been born a Texan, but I got here as fast as I could!"

I grew up in Texas so I may be a bit biased but Texas is the best state in the Union! I lived for 5 years in Nebraska and the whole time could't wait to move back, which I recently did a few months ago. One of the previous answers kind of described the whole state to you and although they did a pretty good job, they failed to mention South Texas where I live. South Texas is called the magic Rio Grande Valley and is known for its great weather (average 80some degrees year round), palm trees, orange groves and citrus industry. Bigger attractions are South Padre Island and Mexico right across the river. The cost of living is cheap and its one of the fastest growing regions in the country. Move to Texas girl, you won't be disappointed!

I have lived around the state, including all around the DFW metroplex, Alpine out in the Big Bend region, Stephenville (hill country), Tyler (east TX), Perryton (top of the panhandle next to OK) and now west Texas. If you like an eclectic, artistic place with lots of music venues and great places to eat, Austin is where you should look. Nicest city in the state, hands down. Houston is sort of the armpit of Texas, dirty, smells bad, gangs, yuk. Amarillo is honkey tonk but experiencing a ton of growth and is looking to elevate it's redneck image to a more upscale one (it's trying anyway, has a long way to go so far). San Antonio is predominately hispanic, lots of culture, (and tourists too) and a neat city to visit. Fredricksburg is the crown jewel of the Hill Country in my opinion. Settled by Germans, it's THE place to hit for Oktoberfest. Dallas is the overrated, typical urban city, Fort Worth is it's redneck, country brother to the west. Each one is so covered up with suburbs that you can't really tell where one ends and the next begins. My parents now live in Frisco, 1 hour north of Dallas, and I'd go there before I'd go to Dallas itself. Midland/Odessa and El Paso, avoid at all costs. Flatter than Calista Flockhart's a**, and nothing but wind and dust to look at. East Texas has a lot of nice towns, it's piney woods and lakes out there, landscape like Louisiana or Arkansas.
Anyone who claims Texas is nothing but boring people and places doesn't know much about the state. It takes an entire day to drive from Marshall on the east side, to El Paso on the far west, so a casual visitor won't even begin to know what the state is like. It's more like 4 states rolled into one, and each one is very different. Not everyone wears boots or drives a truck or has a horse. I've lived in this state since 1976 and the only time I've ever heard anyone say "Yee Haw" was when some tourist got too much Coors into his system and started acting the fool.

I haven't, but once I watched a TV show where hundreds of people actually set-up barbecues and brought their families to stand outside a jail in Texas while someone was being executed, they were cheering and whooping like wildebeest. On the other-hand I have heard the climate is quite favorable.
