I just finished competing at a talent show at my school. My band and i play Californication by the Red Hot Chili Peppers and won third with it. the person who won first made a 5 minute video that took him over 2 months to make. It was pretty good but i believe that it takes much more talent to play Californication perfectly after only practicing 2 times than making a movie in over a month. Am i being unreasonable, or am i mad with reason.

This is only my opinion but here goes, It is unreasonable to put a video and a song in the same category unless it is a music video also. On the other hand although it does take ability and talent to play a cover song perfectly, My vote would go to the original creation providing that it was something well thought out and done well. Now what would have been awsome is if your band wrote a song and the video producer made a video to accompany it. Maybe that is something to consider for the future. Last it takes a lot of guts to get up and perform in front of an audience so I commend you for that alone. Good Luck in all you do!

Neither. I think that the video doesn't even belong in a talent show, not because video production isn't a talent, but because it isn't a live performance. That belongs in a film competition or something. It's like somebody throwing a painting on stage that took them 2 months to paint and winning 1st place with it.

But I doubt you played Californication PERFECTLY after 2 practices. You're not the Chili Peppers, after all. ;)

Three, perhaps four chords, a concussionist, maybe a couple of other long-hairs just for effect, all plugged in to an amp setup that would give a statue a headache, and you have balls enough to call that music? Get real. Play nothing but original stuff, fire that skin-beater and go acoustic for a couple of years. Then try a talent show or a street corner, whichever is handiest.

The reason that you lost is probably because the Chili Peppers suck, and that song is particularly sucky, even by Chili Pepper standards.
