can someone please tell me what this is all about? my understanding is that for example: calgary trades a player (iginla) to philly for forsberg, does philly get to keep iginla and get forsberg back after the season is over? if someone could clear this up for me i'd really appreciate it, thanks.

renting a player is getting a player that will be a free agent at the end of the season, the team that gets the player is only responsible for a prorated amount on the player's contract so they can use them to get to the playoffs while the rented player is free to sign elsewhere at the end of the team's season

Rent-a-player is just a term meaning a team trades for a player knowing that he won't be back at the end of the season, unless he signs a new contract with them. So for your example, if say Philly trades Forsberg (contract ends at the end of the year) to the Flames for Iginla (still has lets say 2 years left on his contract), Iginla will stay with the Flyers for those 2 years, unless they trade him. Forsberg on the other hand, will leave at the end of the season becoming a free agent. Basically, the term is saying you are renting the player for the crucial stretch run to reach the playoffs and the playoffs themselves. Once the season is over, their services are also over with the team, unless they resign with them. Hope this helps.

rent-a-player means the player's contract is expiring at the end of the season and the team that gets him may not be able to keep him. in your scenario, after the season, anyone (including Calgary or Philly) could pick up Forsberg.

You kinda have the right idea. A really good example of a rent-a-player situation is last season when Mark Recchi was traded to the Hurricanes. He was traded to the Canes but both teams new that he was going to return to Pittsburgh when the season ended. The Canes just picked him up to get alittle bit of a playoff push. Usually in rent-a-player situations the team that is "renting" the player doesn't trade one of their big name guys they usually trade a prospect or a draft pick or two.
