I drive around Europe for a living and in every country that i deliver in Foreign lorries pay tolls/road tax.We (The UK) do not charge any tax at all but our transport firms pay through the nose in tax,yet many foreign lorries work here all week then drop their trailers and go back over to Holland and fill up their tanks then come back here for a weeks free driving.
Plus 19 out of 20 accidents involving lorries in the UK involve a foriegn lorry.
So if they were charged £20 a day 1/2 could go to a fund to pay for accidents the rest to the government would this be a good thing?

As far as I know, UK lorries have to pay a road tax to travel in certain European countries. Foreign lorries in the UK use their extra large fuel tanks to buy cheaper diesel. They deliver their load, tout for local UK business and then return to the continent to refuel. Sometimes, they do leave their trailers here. Sometimes they wait for days in the UK for a return load. Often they are driven by East European drivers at a rate far below the minimum wage. They flout the tachograph regulations and are caught only if involved in an accident - regrettably. As ever, it is the UK which appears a soft touch for overseas drivers and a hard case for UK drivers. It is imperative, IMHO, that overseas lorries should pay a UK journey tax for each entry into the UK. Of course, if you think any of that tax would go to help anyone involved in road transport, you obviously believe Gordon Brown is the tooth fairy.

Yes. They use our roads and we have to pay to use many continental roads. Personally, I can see the advantage of toll-roads for everybody. Those in a hurry pay for the convenience of a congestion-free motorway journey and those with the time use the free roads. On the continent, no-one's forced to pay, although the alpine pass of Mont Cenis seems to open later and later each year, forcing those travelling between France and Italy to pay for the expensive Frejus tunnel. But in principle...
