OMG, I can't believe some of the BS coming in for your question. I've been a Mercedes Technician for over 20 years. I've worked in Germany as well as Switzerland and the US. I've worked at the dealer and at independent repair facilities.

Here's the skinny:

At the dealer your car may get routed for service to a low-level apprentice or a journeyman, you won't know. Generally, independent repair facilities don't have apprentices.

As far as maintaining your warranty, if your independent repair facility specializes in Mercedes, you can be fairly certain they use approved parts.

As far as what you get for your money, I've found that the independent will usually do MORE than is required for less money than the dealer. For example, the dealer usually only performs those items that is listed in the service booklet whereas the independent often includes more service items for less money.

The person before me claimed that "the certified technicians are the only ones who really know each and every feature of the car." That is total BS, I've met some poorly qualified "technicians" at the dealer. Many great technicians leave the dealer to open their own independent repair facilities!

Bottom line is that you can get poor service anywhere, at the dealer or otherwise. One thing is likely: you will pay more at the dealer than anywhere else. Does this mean you're getting the best service? No, it does not. If you do some research and find an independent Mercedes specialist in your neighborhood, your car might love you forever ;-)

Hope this helps, good luck!

I will not disagree with the two previous answers on if you can go to an independent shop. However, will they be able to do the full service you get from a dealership? It's very posible that if you take it to an independent that has a good knowledge of MB car/trucks then you probly will get a full service, but at the same time if you take it to just any old shop to save some money then your probly not getting the full service. I will advise you that even though dealership prices are higher, I would atleast call them and ask what is done during a service "A" or "B". This way you can make sure you get the same things done at a independent shop. Lastly, you MUST use Mobil 1 fully synthetic oil. MB cars depending on the model year go 1yr/10,000 mile interval or 1yr/13,000 mile interval. Conventional oil will not last that long and will most definately void a warranty. Hope this helps.

Mercedes B5 Service

Mercedes Service B is a ripoff. The same work can be done at an oil change shop for one third the price. It consist of a full service oil change and changing the brake fluid. Not hardly rocket science.

The is the last Mercedes I will ever own.

Although the dealer might not like idea (they will lose the hundreds in profit for this service), taking your MB to another shop is a better choice moneywise. I have to concur with the previous person; the dealer should not be your only option. One other word of advice: the waranty will not be void as long as you use the recommended replacement fluids/parts. I highly advise you to use the synthetic Mobil 1 oil (it 's worth the $5 per quart investment). Finally, take your car to a recommended mechanic. There are many websites like http://www.mercedesforum.com/

to help you in many ways...
I assure you that you will get a warm feeling knowing you've done well to maintain your car properly without spending a fortune at the dealer.

To get a proper servicing done on your car that will not void your warranty, I would take it to the dealer. I believe the are only A and B services which depend on mileage and time expired. Do you know someone you can trust and is good with the electronics and has the proper tools and can service MB? If not, In the long run during warranty time take it to the dealer.

Absolutely. Any overseas or import service center can take care of your service and do resets for you. The cost of the service is drastically less, and you get the same service. What city do you live in, and I would be more than happy to refer you to someone.
I have customers across the nation.

Firstly, i don't mean to offend anyone, but when you have a mercedes benz, why would you go for anything worse than the dealership. By the time you reach service B, you are still under warranty, you get it serviced free of charge. NO one knows your car better than the dealership you bought it from. When you compare taking it to a garage and taking it to a certified service station, there is no competition. THe benz guys will take the most car of you and your car, and the certified technicians are the only ones who really know each and every feature of the car. You can take it to a garage in a pinch, but whether or not you are under warranty, you don't get anything better than the service of the actual dealer. You might save money, but it is not worth it.

Yes, it is possible to have your service done at any garage that you want, it doesn't have to be a main dealer, provided they stamp your service book. You can find that some garages have the tool to reset the service light, but it's worth speaking to your main dealers to make sure that the warranty will still be valid.
