when leonardo gives the envelope to matt damons girlfriend . not the one he sent but the one he gave to her in person? thats the only part of the movie i dont get ! thanks in advance for any help

I believe the envelope contained information on how Sullivan Matt Damon) was the Rat
Maybe he thought if anything happened to him at least one person would have the truth about the rat and could pass it on

Jack Nicolson's character Costello had a habit of wearing his own "wire" and recording all his conversations. On the CD that she listens to its a recording of the conversation Matt Damon's character and Costello had in the Porn Theater in which he states he's looking for DiCaprio's character William Costigan. She puts 2 and 2 togther and realizes that Damon is the mole inside the police department.

we'll never know but i suppose all the info saying he was an undercover cop with the mob. and revealing that damon was the rat.
