.... in terms of these catagories existing in the film world. should films which are mainly targeted towards black, asian, gay and lesbian audiences be given these categorisations and if so why? if not why? does it really matter if you're not from the gay, black or asian communities to watch these movies? i'd say it doesn't; as long as you enjoy it and are engrossed in the plot, characters and what you see on screen, why should it. and before you ask, no i am not being offensive here, besides, i am from a minority group myself, it's just that it makes me wonder exactly how come you walk into a dvd chain or shop that sells dvds and you have sections dedicated to black films, asian films and gay and lesbian films. you don't see a section that says 'white' hollywood films, or one that says 'straight/hetrosexual'. i am just curious to find out from you lot what you make of this. and as ever, no stupid and/or derogatory answers, please

If you look at the history of film, there have been "tageted film", as there were numerous films done for a Black audience or a mexican audience or an Asian audience.

Certainly if a film crosses over, so much the better, but you may not comprehend the sensibilities of the film. A gay film may approach the audience without having to explain things, so if I just jump into it, things may not make sense to me.

Well, first of all, I think that these types of films bring a greater sense of drama and to a certain point more realism to the film industry. Today's Hollywood seems more interested in mindless entertainment than in actual plot lines or even real and believable drama. On the flip side of the coin, I don't really care for defining these types of film by their particular makers and producers(Black, Latino, Asian, Gay/Lesbian etc.). I believe that it's better to list then as an independent filmmaker or a foreign film company.

Good question. I walked past a stand which featured 'black films' and I thought 'why are these separate?' There were only 5 or 6 different films there. We don't have a heterosexual section do we? Another thing; I live in the UK; why aren't there any US movies in the foreign film section? I know that movies are categorized by genre (horror, action etc), isn't that enough?

I like watching Asian films as they make me think about things in a different way and the have opinions which are fresh to me. I do quite like 'black' or even 'gay' films to a degree. This is all despite me being not Asian, black or gay. Do I need these films to be independently marked? No I do not. I find them and watch them in my own way.

Now you mention it I to have seen this and wondered why are they separate, or why can we not have a section as you say for white "hollywood films", or is this to much like skating on thin ice.

we rent LOADS of movies every month and have never seen that in our video store. maybe you should contact the owner of the store and see why they have the sections dedicated to races.
