Get a catch and release trap, they catch the raccoons unharmed ,then you can release them in a park away from the homes. Their inexpensive and easily used . Call your local animal control officer for advise.

Securing the tops of the garbage cans with bungie cords or purchase garbage containers that lock / snap closed.

You can also build or purchase an mini storage shed. The are usually made of wood or plasic and are large enough to put two garbase cans / containers inside.

Another option may to place a light that is triggered by motion. So if the raccoon come around in the middle of the night the light will come on and scare them away.... I find they are not usually affected by this tactic often though...

I would be cautious about harming the animal as it is against the law in some provinces/states... not to mention cruel and inaffective.

Depends on the climate were you live I Say this is because animal is looking for food after being in hibernation,~~~~~~ There Hungry ~~~~~i would put the garbage in a shed or garage or can build a Bin out of stable wood. put the cans inside the bin and make sure you have all garbage cans tightly sealed even if you have to keep a heavy rock on top the can, also can keep your garbage tightly sealed .. Raccoons are a government protected animal don't lay poison or shot them . set some food in another place catch then in a trap and haul them to other areas. stabilize you cans. or get a closed in dumpster with heavy lid...the iron dumpster

Sometimes putting moth balls in your garbage can will make them go away. Getting really tight fitting tops helps but will not stop them. Best to get some company to come and take them away-catch them and release in the country.

poison will kill everything in the neibourhood .... a good thing to do is construct a garbage can dolly that holds 2,3, or 4 cans .. made out of 2X4s' and bicycle wheels on one end ... a handle on the other ... that will keep them from turning over ... then keep the lids bungie-corded on ....

We have had the same problem. Isn't it maddening!

The only thing that seems to work is to have a trash can where the handles come up to secure the lid. We even bungie cord around them to the fence so they can't knock them over.
They can be quite cute and one of them my husband feeds.
hope this helps!
