I would first get a newspaper from the area you are looking at.
You also might drive around and see if there are any "fixer uppers" that look vacant. If you do find any, check with the neighbors to see who might own the house and go from there.
Best Wishes!

Look in the local paper and any local free ad publications. Cheaper houses are often "For Sale by Owner", so no realtor fees have to be paid. You can also drive around and look for abandoned/unlived-in houses and write down the address, then locate the owner by looking up that parcel at the local planning office (at the county administration building most likely). Contact them and see if they're interested in selling. Realtors also have fixers, but you'll likely pay more (since the seller has to give the realtor a commission from the sale, the price gets marked up to cover it).

I would check out the real estate agent listings, phone some realitiers. As far as auctions, here in Canada, the owners that have lapsed on their taxes are still given 3 months to come up with the funds. As far as the buyer of these homes, the buyer had to come up with at least 30 grand and was not guaranteed nothing.
Take a drive around the neightbourhood, get the goods on the houses that appeal to you, I have even knocked on a few doors to inquire if they were interested in selling. That is where you are going to find the best deals, just by payig attention and inquiring. good luck

Going to auctions is a great idea. Also, find listings from realtors and on the internet for houses that are being foreclosed. Get ideas from "Flip-This-House" on the discovery channel. Usually, try to buy a house that is run down in a really high-end or good neighborhood. You will get a higher profit that way. I also learned that as long as you do that and just fix the basic, don't overdue on the remodeling, just make it look nice, you can still make a pretty good profit. Good luck!

try your local newspaper in the classified section for tax delinquent properties, if that doesnt work, try your local taxing county authority, like the real estate board or assessors office, most times they are only too glad to get those abandoned and delinquents fixed up and back on the tax rolls, as for your choices, there are many, choose wisely
