Basically it just means that it's better to finish a task one has begun than to not finish it or leave it undone. You can use it when you are tardy in finishing something or turning something in. It's funny, I used to have a teacher that used to say "better never than late." o_O ;)

"Better late than never" is pretty self explanatory, but perhaps an example will let you understand it better.

Say, for example, that you forget your friend's birthday - and so you forget to give them a gift! Later you find out, and you buy them a gift and give it to them later. You can say 'better late than never' here, because it means - it was better to give something late than not do anything at all.

Maybe you forgot to give in some homework, and you give it in after the date? It's nicer to have given in something late than not give anything in at all.

It means that although what you did wasn't good - it was after when it was supposed to be - it's better that you did it late, instead of not doing it at all. Get it?

well, it's better to be late for a party than to never go. It's better to turn your homework in late rather than never even turning it in. We also use it in situations like that, if the person can take a joke!!!

Try turning this English homework in late, then use it as an example. A+ for sure!

If a friend had a party at 6 but you don't finish work until 6:30 you couldn't come until after 6:30
It is better to be late and show your friend you cared about them then to not show up at all.

It is very literal... something is better off to come late than to never come at all. For example some teachers may accept late homework because they believe that it is "better late than never."

Better late than never means exactly what is says. If something occurs far later than you expected it to , or much later than it did for others BUT it did finally happen, well then it is better that it occurred later than having never occured at all. For instance finding love later in life.

it means better to turn in the work and get some kind of credit than to not turn it in and get nothing. We use it wen we do something late like a present or gift

It means that it is better to show up late than to not show up at all. This would apply to something like school. It's better that you're there and late than to just not go.
