My first one I bought was from a guy on ebay who trades as snatch-atch & laptop magic. It was without the software which I got a mate to add for me. Still works fine and was second hand when I had it. That is a dell. I've recently bought one for my lad. It was such a good buy I got another for myself, which although cost less and I thought was the same spec, was actually better. They were both from dell over the internet. My lads was fine. I messed mine up but the dell people kept in contact and rang me to talk me through fixing what I caused. I'd consider buying from both again. I've seen all the bad press about dell but touch wood, no problems hardware-wise for me. Besides, for about £300 for quite a powerful machine, I'm happy.
The wife's got an acer to use from work. She's on her second one now..

Yes, it's possible.

Check the normal sites such as HP, Dell, Sony. Also, what the ads as they sometimes heavily discount a very good model to make room for a new one.

If you're willing to have good.great but not the latest, you can get a lot of laptop for the money.

e.g. Sony is selling a beautiful duo for under $900.

But know your needs before buying. Once you've bought a laptop, you're done. Very hard to upgrade anything but RAM!!!

You could get a bargain from e-bay, as long as you know what you are looking for, and set yourself a limit when bidding. You can get both new and used items. If you have any queries on what is on offer, don't be scared to ask questions before you bid. Just remember to ask everything you think relevant & read every part of the advert (for small print). Good luck.

From experience, Sony and HP are the brands to go for. I've been told to avoid Acer and Advant.

A few years ago I did a bit of research and bought a Sony. It's been spot on, touch wood, can't fault it.

I would recommend Futureshop. They always have good deals. However, if you are a student, and are looking for a laptop simply for word processing and internet, not anything too intense, then go to a university and look at the bullitin boards. They always have cheap laptops for sale.

My advice. Never trust a Dell. Sony, Toshiba, and a lot of the other top brands have so far never figured out how to properly make a good laptop.

HP.com is your best bet, or Compaq.com. Those are the best bang for your buck.

Buy one from DELL, because you can get a decent model with a good warranty for not a lot of money.

I recently bought one from Dell, which was about $500 & that model should cost about $800! Check them out, but do shop around before you buy anything so you're sure you're getting the best buy.
