My brand new car battery is dead. I can jump it and it will run fine.. all electronics work. With all electrical accessories turn on, i get 14.7v at the battery. When i shut off the car and try to restart it, nothign but clicks. It seems either the battery isn't holding a charge from the alternator after 20-30 minutes of run time, or the alternator isn't putting out the amps. but even under full load, 14.7 v at the battery. what do you think?

You mention that your battery is new but didn't say why you put a new battery in to begin with. Did your old one die and you replaced it? If so what may have happened is your voltage regulator is bad. On alot of cars this is built into the alternator. It will still charge but doesnt know when to stop putting out if that makes any sense. What will happen is it will cook your battery and then the first thing people do is throw another battery in it. You should have your alternator checked and im pretty sure they will find that you have an issue. Your going to need a new battery as well since it probably burned your new one up also.

Assuming that you are measuring the battery itself, you may have a short somewhere in the system, or a device which is on, although it would have to be a major device drawing a lot of current.

Before you go to a diagnosic place, I would suggest you remove the battery and take it to a shop where they can put a full charge on it.

Have the alternator checked separately, I think Autozone will do this for free.

If you get no answer from these procedures, send it to the shop.
Finding a short is a pure pain, but if you don't do it, the problem will continue

Its 99% your alternator is shot. To see if it is for sure and so you dont waste time and money, turn your car on and disconnect the battery while the car is running. It should keep running for a while. If It dies within a minute or two or instantly, then your alternator is bad.

You probably have something that is constantly draining your battery (like an alarm system) and your alternator is shot.
Another possibility is the belt going to the alternator is loose & may just require a repositioning of the alternator to tighten the contact.
Good luck.

It appears that your alternator is working fine. That's what is keeping it running. Your battery is dead. Get another jump, drive to a shop or Auto Zone or somewhere and get it tested. They will tell you it is completely dead and sell you another one and if you are in the right place, even install it for you.

Maybe you got a defective battery? It happens. Or a bad alternator or voltage regulator?
