Living abroad can be a great experience, but that doesn't mean it's an easy one. You'll be moving to a country where you don't know anyone, may not have a job, may not speak the language fluently (almost certainly less well than natives), and don't know the customs. Having lived for six months in London and four months in Barcelona I can tell you that you will be amazed at the culture shock. Which doesn't mean that you might not be incredibly happy as an expat. But if you want to move to a foreign place to "start your life over", it sounds like you might be going through some rough stuff. Is this really the time to relocate to a place where you have no support network?

If you do decide to go, make sure you have several thousand dollars saved up--five thousand or more to be on the safe side--and a work permit set up first. Also, try to figure out some basic information beforehand, like:

1) How long will it take me to find an apartment and what am I expecting to pay in rent?
2) What part of the city do I want to live in?
3) What's the contact info for the various utility companies (electricity, gas, water, phone, cable, cell phone, internet)?
4) If I don't already speak Italian, how/where will I learn?
5) Will I need to buy a car? How much is gas? Parking? If not, how much does public transportation cost?

The more prepared you are beforehand, the better things will go once you get there.

How could making a positive move that is something YOU want to do, possibly be "BAD" .... You have to progress to your physical age of 21 and stop being the "little girl" who seeks approval for her "bad" or "good" behavior. Become an adult. Move On.

I think moving to a country you want to live in and explore is a GREAT Idea.

When I retire after working for 51 years and raising my family, and coping with life in the U.S. which hasn't been all that great for a working woman with no family, I intend to move to a small town in Southern Portugal, rent a home and use it as a base to travel around Europe. If I am Lucky, I will never have to return to the United States.

And one reason I am looking forward to it is: Portugal does not have a standing army and leaders who think it is acceptable to invade soveriegn nations anytime they feel like it! What a relief that will be.

Good luck!

If you have a longing to live in Italy, then go. If you like it, you will be glad you did. If you don't, it is an easy flight home. Either way you will love the experience. I have lived in Switzerland, Germany, Japan, and England, and I loved every minute of it.
A friend of mine left for Norway just after high school and just settled there. She comes back to the U.S. for an occasional visit, but she loves it there. Give it a try!
Good luck.

i moved to europe between getting my ba and my ma. it's a life changing experience and one i will never regret. warning though: the international life is addictive. the longer you stay abroad the harder it is to return "home" because you have changed and no longer completely fit in. it's still a VERY good idea.
enjoy italia!
