There are little drops you can get at the pet store, you put in your tank. It will help the water stay clearer longer, and will take the bad things out from the tap water. Plus it helps the fish stay helthier and makes their scales shiny! Its like 3.00. :)

Increase your water changes to once every week, and you should have no problems. All tanks need a partial water change every week or they will have problems.

And don't change the filter unless water actually can not go through it. The bacteria in the filter will help remove the smell. If the filter gets dirty, swish it around in a bucket of old tank water to clean it off. You should not need to change the filter that often. I clean mine and only replace them maybe once a year if that.

If the tank is heavily populated, the every 2-3 week water changes may not be often enugh to prevent odors. If you increase your water changes to once a week that should take care of it.

You may be overfeeding,or have dead fish or rotted plants. You might have to clean or change the gravel, all the water and make sure the filters are cleaned out regularly. Carbon in the filter helps, but must be changed from time to time.

Your tank smells bad because it is not fully cycled. Ammonia and nitrites (bad smelly toxins) build up in the water, and when the tank is cycled it has beneficial bacteria to get rid of the ammonia. Beneficial bacteria lives in the filter media. Each time you change it, you take out that good bacteria. You should only changes the filter media if it is absolutely falling apart. If it is dirty, just rinse it in a bucket of USED tank water.

After about a year with my freshwater tank, it was starting to smell a little off, so I changed as much of the water as I could. About 80%. It's much clearer now, and doesn't smell at all. Also, when you do a water change be sure to suck up the poo inside the gravel and underneath the decorations.
