How cop on 25G cheated death
Beaten officer saved by other rookies
tells of his agonizing, bloody ordeal

BY ERNIE NASPRETTO
DAILY NEWS POLICE BUREAU

Officer Joseph Cho was bludgeoned with bat.
Sprawled across the back seat of a speeding police car, rookie cop Joseph Cho awoke covered in blood, numb and unable to move as two officers in the front seat spoke frantically about his grave condition.
"I think he's shot." "There's blood all over the place."
Officer Cho had no idea that he had been bludgeoned by a bat-wielding assailant on a dark street in Queens.
He didn't know how the cops racing him to the hospital had found him.
And he had no way to know that he would become the symbolic face of the bravery demonstrated each day by the NYPD's rookie cops - who earn just $25,100 a year while in the academy and $32,700 a year afterward while patrolling the city's most-dangerous neighborhood

Yes, the cop should make more than that HOWEVER it isn't as if he wasn't aware of the salary when he applied and it isn't as if he wasn't aware he could make more money and live safer in another career. Policemen and Firefighters are truly heroes for doing what they do for the price they do.

I agree with you on this one. I think that police, firefighters, and teachers need a lot more money. It is hard to get good people as it is. Expecting them to work for almost no money and you pretty much guarantee that the best for the job will not apply.

If a person wants to be a police officer just because it is "fun" is either in for a rude awakening or is going to be a bad police officer.

People are cops because of the following. Meet women, Think the uniforms are neat, Think it will help, therefore fulfilling a need to be useful, The great retirement plans. Get to cary a gun and be cool. Like bustin heads. Those are not all, just some reasons.
You can't put a price on doing what you like. You compare those other salaries, some of them are ridiculously high , but I can't do anything about it.

Police, firemen, Military personnel do not do it for the money. My son is a US Army Captain who took a $18,000 pay cut to serve his nation. Those who serve others do it for the love of others & their rights & freedoms.
According to their webpage - At 5 years salary ranges from $59,000-76,000. Still not enough but moving the right way. Every wants them to make moe but no one wants to pay more taxes. It is always just charge the other guy.
I pray he recovers & the man who attacked him gets the maximum setence.

25G for a rookie cop in one of America's most dangerous cities is a disgrace. Doesn't say much for their union.

It's shameful isn't it! They should be paid much more than that. They put their lives on the line every time they go out on the streets.
