What should I say at an interview why I have a 3 month break in employment? The true answer is that I have been in search of a job for 3 months, but haven't been hired anywhere...but to me, that's not a good thing to say because it brings up the question as to "why hasn't she been hired?" I don't want to lie, but I have no problem embelishing the truth. Any ideas?

The best thing is to be honest! You have to remember if you're speaking to someone who conducts a lot of interviews they're most likely going to be able to read through any of your lies. How many times has a hiring manager heard someone stutter during the question - “what have you been doing for the last three months?” A LOT!

The second most important aspect is to be confident! Go into the phone interview and in person interview with the understanding that you bring unique experiences and skill sets to the table. You have 100% unique skills, knowledge, and abilities.

The real truth of why you have not found a job yet- SUGGESTED ANSWER -
You have taken some time to define where you would like to take your CAREER at this point in your life. Prioritizing what is important to you in your next career move and defining what type of employer you would like to work for. You have now detailed what you're looking for and are conducting a selective job search to find the perfect opportunity for you.

If you answer the question this way- you're not being dishonest; however, it is a way of selling your 3 months of unemployment.

Just beware that the next question is probably going to be- what is the perfect position for you? … If you want the job you’re interviewing it better match who you describe your ideal position.

GOOD LUCK!

It is all about spin. Just explain that you don't want to accept the first offer you get because you are taking some time to assess the direction in which your career is heading.

I always sit down and when they ask the first question, look all perplexed and nervous and then suddenly yell "ABORT THE MISSION" and run out of the room.
