My son did the exact same thing. He started off at night sleeping a 4-5 hour stretch, and then a couple of 3 hour stretches through morning. Then he randomly stopped and starting waking up every 3 hours - on the dot. I was solely breastfeeding my son as well. I also only feed on 1 side at each feeding (I was told the hindmilk has more nutrients). As long as he is gaining weight, he is fine as far as food goes. (I actually used to feed my son for 20-30 minutes until he developed acid reflux (at about 2 months). Now if I feed him more than 10-15 minutes he pukes anyway. If he is content after 10 minutes, that is fine. If you are still worried, burp him and then offer it again. I know they say breastfed babies don't burp, but my little guy always has.) Baby sleep patterns change - my pediatrician said it was normal. If it is any consolation - my son is now 5 months, 1 week old and sleeping much better. He started baby cereal and purees about 5 weeks ago and out of nowhere about a week ago he started randomly sleeping from 8:30pm-5:30/6:30am - and that is without having to cry himself back to sleep. He has done it about 5 times in the past 8 days. His earlier sleep pattern were exactly as you described your son's sleep patterns - odd, seemingly backwards steps from 5 hours down to 3. But he is now back up to about 9 - so just hang in there and be patient. If you are tired, try napping with him. I actually would do 1 or 2 of his daytime feeds in bed so we could take a nap together (I didn't want to risk waking him when I put him in the crib - at least not unless I was well-rested). Just prop him up on your arm with his head in the crook of your elbow - I am able to nap and feed him in that position and have never even come close to rolling over on him.
Good luck!

my baby constantly had changing sleep patterns. Just when I thought I had her figured out she would change the "schedule". She didn't get more consistent until about 6 months. Also the nursing thing totally sounds like what and I went through and still am going through. Often my daughter would nurse 5 minutes, one side and be perfectly content until the next feeding. I used to worry like crazy, but she was always gaining weight and was content and happy. I wish now that I wouldn't have worried about it so much and just enjoyed my time with her more. As long has he is gaining weight and seems happy you are doing fine! Good luck!

By 7 weeks old my first born slept 6 hours strait through the night and still slept during the day. He slept more when he was having a growth spurt though and he had one about this time. If he's gaining weight and seems content I wouldn't worry.

At about 8 weeks one of my twins started to sleep throught the night... 11pm-7am... I couldn't believe that it was possible at such a young age... I wouldn't worry about his eating... as long as he is growing and the Dr doesn't see anything wrong don't worry. He will let you know if he is hungry.
I am a first time mom to twins... if you are really concerned and are in canada, you could contact telehealth for some help.

babies have a growth spurt between 6-8 weeks therefore they need to feed more frequently. Hopefully it will only last a week and he will back to his normal routine. Also seven weeks is still very young they haven't quite adjusted to the real world, give him time!

toddler's exercises exchange, sometimes even on a regular basis, based upon their prefer. ingesting each 2-3 hours is frequent for an toddler. My daughter has an inclination to nod off on the 1st breast, looking candy and content. What i've got discovered to do is to alter her pants 0.5 way with the aid of feeding....that wakes her up purely wonderful for around 2. considering she's sound asleep for the duration of the evening, her morning meal takes her in basic terms approximately 5-10 minutes simply by fact i'm so finished...and she or he can be happy for the subsequent 4 hours. extremely some relies upon on how right this moment you "permit down"...this is, how right this moment it takes on your milk to start flowing via itself, and how right this moment the milk flows out. purely watch the diapers. If he's wetting them each feeding and pooping various situations an afternoon (or one great important poop an afternoon), then he won't be starving.
