Ok this may sound kind of weird but it seems to me that an alarmingly large - and growing - number of people seem incapable of SPELLING basic words.
I started noticing that most of the emails I get have a number of spelling mistakes - not to mention incorrect punctuation etc.

Worse yet, it seems to be getting more and more frequent even in books! I swear I haven't read a single book in the last 6 months that hasn't had several spelling, grammar AND punctuation mistakes.

Another thing I've noticed is that some people don't seem to be able to keep the "red thread" going throughout what they write - that is, some kind of coherence. It's even so bad that, in some books, the author repeatedly confuses different characters!

Is it just me or has anyone else noticed this too...?

i've noticed that too. i don't know why some people think it's "cool" to misspell, especially like "da" or "wat". i read this article on CNN about how more and more kids write essays using this shorthand and they actually have the nerve to turn it in! don't they know that spelling like that makes you look stupid?

you betcha!!

Not so much in books, but I swear, in the business world folks don't seem to be able to keep it together much at all! I mean, for crissake - How can someone submit a cover letter and/or resume rife with misspellings and horrible grammar and expect to get interviewed? We get probably over 50% of the resumes we receive with horrible errors in them. Pity too, because I toss every one of those into the round file.

And my BOSS!!!! Sheesh!!!! I cannot believe he sends out emails and documents to the rest of the company (at the VP level!!!!) with spelling and grammar errors. He at least is aware of it...sometimes he has ME write emails or company documents for him because he knows I write more weller than him (had to throw that in there, dontcha know ;).

I tell my kids (and anyone else that will listen) if you can spell, or better yet, WRITE, you will be in great demand out in the workplace.

It's a pet peeve of mine...especially in this day and age where every computer or web page has a free, easy to use spell-checker one click away.

I've also noticed that. Online, I feel that a lot of typos occur due to a lack of training with typing. But, I read so many questions and answers on here that absolutely make no sense. Truthfully, I can't stand it. Also, I have noticed mistakes in books that I read. There is no excuse for this--that's why there are editors!
It drives me nuts and I'm glad I'm not the only one.

When I was a kid I used to read the Encyclopedia Britannica for fun. I found two typos in the entry on Louis XIV.

Glad I'm not the only one who's noticed.

No, its not just you, and what's even worse is that they don't even try to use a spell check, which amounts to hitting a key. It just shows how lazy and impatient people are getting.
