I am wondering because I always see previews of the upcoming shows with scenes of them with the guests. I'm thinking that maybe they do the first part on the air date and pre-record just the interview parts.

It's on Live on the east coast. But sometimes the interviews are pre-recorded because the really "big" names won't show up that early in the morning for an interview. You can tell when it's Live because they show the morning paper and there's a glass of chocolate soymilk in front of Regis. I hate when they "pretend" they're live and you know they're not. When they do that they can't talk about what they did the night before.

Guests often appear more than one time on the show. For commercials they will run a previous interview of that star. For example, Donald Trump has been on numerous times so they have lots of interview footage of him to run on a commercial.

Some days they are only live for the first 20min. and then play pre-recorded interviews. You can tell by the change of clothes on Regis and Kelly.

It is usually recorded live but some areas do not show it live. Depending on where you are you may be seeing it later in the day. It is live only if you see it at 9:00am Eastern time.
