I hate them. Kids are always hiding them under their desks, trying to text their friends. They use them to cheat on tests and to arrange to get out of class at the same time as their friends. In general, they are a distraction to the learning process. We have a classroom phone that the office can use if a student has an urgent message from home, but other than that, why would anybody need them at school?

If students could follow the school rules regarding cellular phones, there wouldn't be a problem. Unfortunately, many students cannot.
In my school, students may have cell phones in the building, but not on in class. If a teacher sees a student with a cell phone, the student has his or her phone taken away, gets a saturday school, and the parent has to come pick up the phone in the principal's office. This is the same policy for mp3 players, gameboys, and other electronics.

I think students should be able to use them when the teacher isnt speaking or when the students are walking down the hall. Or at lunch. I know at the High School students are allowed to use cell phones and mp3/ipods during lunch and in between classes. Listening to IPODS in class helps some students concentrate on their work.

there have been a few school violence incidents where cell phones came in pretty handy. i don't have a problem with them, as long as students don't use them in class.

They should be filed somewhere when the kids come into class. It isn't good enough to say 'don't use them in class' - that should suffice, but kids pay no attention to rules like that and continue to use them during class, during exams (yes!!!) and at other inappropriate times.

They are absolutely unnecessary. They should be banned from the school grounds.

As long as they don't use them during class, I think it's OK for them to have them.
