I've done the whole exchange student thing in Costa Rica. Next summer I'm hoping to spend the semester in Spain. It is a really great experience and I highly recommend it. You gain an appreciation for another culture. When I went to Costa Rica I also gained appreciation for the American culture because of how many things I disliked in Costa Rica and missed from home. This winter though, I stayed with a friend in Germany where I mostly gained appreciation for the German culture and almost came to prefer it over the American culture. Either way it is a good learning experience. I also recommend living with a host family so you can fully live the culture of the country. Exchange programs are great for learning foreign languages and I feel that speaking with native speakers on a regular basis is really the only way to become fluent. The whole experience is also just nice to get away from home a bit!

Is this a sarcastic remark, like you don't think we'd benefit?

There's sooo many benefits but the list is so long I won't even list them all. A good idea would be to read blogs about current and past students who are/have traveled abroad. One is blogabroad.com

It taught me to be more open minded, and how close minded most people are to anything that is different. Especially cultural differences. It also taught me to be a better, more competitive student. US student's attitudes toward their education is that it should be handed to them, that they shouldn't have to work for the grade.

Many reasons, for example, to learn a new language, a new way of living, to understand different cultures and meet new people, to understand different ways of being, to appreciate more your own country, to open new doors on your professional future, to become more open minded.. lots of reasons!
