My family (me & hubby and 2 kids) would like to travel to Costa Rica to see my aunt.

Anyone know the best time of year for good airfare, what is the cheapest anyone has seen fare to San Jose, and what time of year I should avoid weather-wise. School schedule NOT a concern!

I don't want to let my aunt know until I've done some of the prelim. work, as she will get excited about us coming and I need to get things worked out first to make sure it is a sure thing before I talk to her.

Thanks!

For prices, I'd recommend you use a website like http://travel.nextag.com/cheap-flight-to-costa-rica/travel-html
They do comparisons on prices of multiple airlines.

Usually, "high season" in Costa Rica goes from December to April, which is the "dry" season Therefore, fares increase, specially from Christmas until the end of the first week in January, and also Easter week are periods with lots of international travelers, and many also many locals traveling within the country (the beaches are especially crowded).

The rainy season, or winter in Costa Rica (May through November) has been dubbed the 'green season' by the tourism industry...

But I have good news for you! The weather methereological institute in Costa Rica says that this year because of "el Niño" the rainy season is expected to be delayed about two months, to june or even late july, so you might be able to get "green season" rates and get to Costa Rica to find "high season" weather....

So, you might want to avoid the september thru november period, that's when the rain get really tough!! Basically during that time there are sunny mornings with mid 70's temperatures, but after noon it starts raining... and it might not stop for hours, or sometimes even days!!

Fares are always lowest when the weather is the worst (August-October. The early rainy season (May-early July) usually has enough sun to make it nice. Probably the best time to get a cheap fare and decent weather would be mid-late April--after holy week and just before the onset of the rainy season.

Too hot and humid in summer. Big time rainy season in the fall. (they call it the "green"season, ha ha.)
Best times are Dec 1 through May 30
Airfare always cheapest when people do not want to go and planes are only half full Spending a little extra to go when you can enjoy the place is worth thousands of dollars.......
