Pro athletes are not paid to be role models. They are who they are. Most I would guess are decent people and the role model issue never becomes an issue. However some have integrity problems. Whether this small group are athletes or not they would still have the same problems.
Most are aware of the public status and try to maintain a good public imagine. But it's not their job to be role models. Mickey Mantle was a good example of one who said just before he died. "I'm an example of the wrong kind of role model. Don't be like me!" There is a large difference between heroes and role models.

No, just because they are good at a sporting activity does not make them good people or have any morals or values that you would want as a role model.
OK, let me put it this way. They are paid entertainers, that is all. The contribute little to nothing for the betterment of the planet or the people on the planet. They are good at playing a game, which why people think they should be role models is ridiculous. They will never cure cancer or anything really useful. They play their sports, make their millions and complain the whole time that they are not getting paid enough.
The scientist who is working to cure cancer should be a role model, there are so many people who make the world go around or a better place, that a pro-athlete would be a poor choice.

Yes. First of all, most pro athletes (those that don't take performance enhancing drugs) are very dedicated and motivated and take care of their bodies. Also, they do a lot of work for charities and use their "celebrity" status to do good. Just look at all that Lance Armstrong has done for cancer research.

Maybe they should be but they definitely do not qualify as role models as it stands right now.
In the sports of Football, Baseball and Basketball most of them are criminals, thugs, gangsters, drug abusers, and have absolutely no respect for women.
Not good material for a role model as far as I am concerned.

Yes! If kids and even adults have a dream, I say go for it. What is there to lose. If you cant succeed then you find something better that fits you.
